Is eAssist a real hybrid?

It is a mild hybrid. The electric side assists the engine and runs the stop-start system; it never drives the car on its own, which is why the pack is small.

Why was I quoted so much for an eAssist battery?

Often because the quote is for a full hybrid pack. At 115V the eAssist pack is a much smaller assembly. Ask which pack is being priced before you accept the figure.
