Codes that show up on the Toyota Prius

If a scanner has given you a code, start here. None of them is an instruction to buy a battery — each page says what the code means, what else causes it, and what a proper diagnosis checks.

• Red triangleThe red triangle with an exclamation mark is a master warning light. It means the car has stored a fault somewhere and wants you to look at the multi-information display for a message. On its own it tells you nothing about which system is unhappy — it is the car saying “read the message”, not “buy a battery”.
• Check Hybrid SystemThis message means the hybrid control system detected a fault serious enough that it wants the vehicle inspected. It usually appears with the red triangle. It is a system-level statement — it covers the high-voltage battery, the inverter and its cooling, the motor-generators, the 12V supply and the sensors that tie them together.
• Check engine lightOn a hybrid, the check engine light works the same way it does on any car — it means the powertrain control system has stored an emissions-related fault. The difference is that on a Toyota or Lexus hybrid, the “powertrain” includes the hybrid system, so this light can be set by anything from an evaporative emissions leak to a hybrid battery fault.
• 12V battery / charging lightThe battery-shaped warning light refers to the 12-volt auxiliary system — the small battery that wakes the car up and runs the electronics. It does not refer to the high-voltage hybrid pack. On a hybrid there's no conventional alternator; the DC/DC converter inside the inverter assembly keeps the 12V battery charged, so this light can point at either the battery or the converter side.
• P0A80P0A80's standard description is literally “Replace Hybrid Battery Pack”, which is why it causes so much panic and so many unnecessary purchases. What it actually means is that the battery ECU has determined the pack is no longer performing within its expected parameters — typically because one or more blocks have deviated significantly from the rest. It is a strong signal that the pack needs attention. It is not a confirmation of which blocks, why, or whether the pack is the root cause rather than a victim of something else.
• P0A7FP0A7F reports that the hybrid battery pack has deteriorated beyond the limits the control system expects. In practice it shows up on packs that have aged — reduced capacity, blocks that no longer hold up under load, or a pack that can no longer be balanced. Like P0A80, it is a meaningful signal about the pack's condition rather than a specific instruction about which part to buy.
• P3000P3000 is a Toyota and Lexus code indicating a fault in the battery control system. On its own it's broad — the useful detail is in the sub-code (often called an INF code) stored alongside it, which narrows the fault down considerably. A scan tool that reads only P3000 without the sub-code has given you half the information.
• P3011–P3024Toyota assigns a separate code to each block inside the high-voltage battery pack, running in sequence. When one of these sets, the battery ECU is telling you that a specific block has become weak relative to the others. This is genuinely useful information — it tells a technician exactly where in the pack to look. What it doesn't tell you is whether the rest of the pack is healthy enough for a spot repair to hold up.
• P0AA6High-voltage systems in hybrids are designed to be electrically isolated from the vehicle's metal body. P0AA6 means the system has detected that this isolation is no longer within spec — in other words, there may be an unintended electrical path between the high-voltage system and the chassis. That's a different category of problem from a tired battery, and it deserves more caution than most hybrid codes.
• P0A0FOn a hybrid, the gasoline engine is started by the hybrid system rather than a conventional starter motor. P0A0F means the system commanded the engine to start and the engine didn't. Because a hybrid code number is involved, people often assume the battery — but the failure is frequently on the ordinary engine side: fuel, spark, compression or a sensor.
• P0A93Toyota hybrids run a dedicated coolant loop just for the inverter, with its own electric pump and reservoir. P0A93 indicates that this cooling circuit isn't performing as expected. It's an important code to recognise in Arizona because the symptom — a hybrid warning and reduced power on a hot day — looks exactly like a failing battery to anyone who doesn't check.
• C1259C1259 is set by the brake control system, and that is exactly what makes it misleading. It means the braking system tried to use regenerative braking — recovering energy through the electric motor instead of the friction brakes — and the hybrid system did not accept it. The brake system is reporting what it observed. It is not usually reporting its own failure. Nine times out of ten the thing that needs fixing is on the hybrid side, and the brakes are the messenger.
• P0AFAP0AFA means the battery control system saw the hybrid pack's voltage fall below what it expects. In plain terms, the pack is reading weaker than it should. That is often exactly what it sounds like — an aged pack that has lost capacity — but the system can only report what its sensors tell it, and a fault in the voltage-sensing path produces a low reading from a pack that is not actually that weak. The distinction is worth real money, so it belongs at the start of the diagnosis rather than the end.
• P0A94Your hybrid doesn't have an alternator. The job of keeping the 12V battery charged belongs to the DC/DC converter, which steps the high-voltage system down to 12 volts. P0A94 means that converter isn't performing as expected. The reason this strands cars is simple: once the converter stops charging the 12V battery, the 12V battery runs down, and when it does the car can't stay awake — no READY, no restart. It presents like a dead battery, which is why it gets misdiagnosed as one.
• P0A7DP0A7D reports that the pack's state of charge has fallen under the threshold the control system needs. The important part is what it does not say: it does not say the pack is worn out. A healthy pack on a car that sat for two months sets this code, and so does a pack genuinely at the end of its life. The difference is whether it recovers once the car is driven and charged normally again.
