P3000 — Battery Control System (Toyota / Lexus)
What it means in plain English
P3000 is a Toyota and Lexus code indicating a fault in the battery control system. On its own it's broad — the useful detail is in the sub-code (often called an INF code) stored alongside it, which narrows the fault down considerably. A scan tool that reads only P3000 without the sub-code has given you half the information.

Possible causes
Plural on purpose. Any of these can produce this result — which is exactly why a code is not a diagnosis.
- A fault within the high-voltage battery pack itself, including a weak block.
- Battery ECU or its wiring and connectors.
- Sensor faults — voltage sensing, current sensing or temperature sensing within the pack.
- Battery cooling system faults, depending on the sub-code stored.
- Interlock or high-voltage circuit issues.
- Poor connections at the service plug or main HV connectors.
What a professional diagnostic process should check
- 1Retrieve the sub-code, not just P3000 — this requires a scan tool with proper Toyota/Lexus hybrid coverage.
- 2Use the sub-code to direct the diagnosis rather than assuming a pack failure.
- 3Capture block-level battery data under load.
- 4Inspect HV connectors, service plug seating and interlock circuit.
- 5Check cooling fan operation and airflow.
- 6Verify sensor readings for plausibility across the pack.
- 7Test the 12V battery and charging voltage.
What you can safely do now
- Ask whoever scanned the car for the sub-code as well as P3000 — many basic code readers won't show it.
- Note the conditions when the warning appeared.
- Check the cooling intake for blockage.
- Bring any previous repair records, especially if the pack has been worked on before.
What not to do
- Don't let anyone quote a battery from a bare P3000 with no sub-code. That's not enough information to spend that kind of money on.
- Don't clear the code before it's read properly.
- Don't attempt to open the high-voltage system yourself.
When towing or urgent service is appropriate
Depends on how the car is behaving. Normal driving with the code stored usually allows a prompt trip to a shop; reduced power, refusal to enter READY, or additional serious faults means tow it.
