P0A80: does it always mean you need a new hybrid battery?

P0A80 means your hybrid pack has degraded past the point the computer will keep balancing it — but that doesn't automatically mean full replacement.
No, P0A80 does not automatically mean you need a new hybrid battery. It means the battery ECU has decided the pack has degraded past the point where it can keep the modules balanced — and depending on how many blocks are weak and how far apart they've drifted, reconditioning is often still on the table.
The code's official description is "Replace Hybrid Battery Pack," which is why so many people read it and assume the decision is made. The computer is reporting a condition, not quoting you a repair. What it can't tell you from the code alone is how the pack got there.
What P0A80 actually reports
Your hybrid pack is a string of modules — commonly 28 in a Gen 2 or Gen 3 Prius, grouped into 14 voltage blocks the ECU watches individually. During normal driving the computer charges and discharges the whole string together and expects every block to track closely.
When one or two blocks start falling behind, the ECU tries to compensate. It narrows the state-of-charge window, works the engine harder, and shuffles load. P0A80 sets when that compensation stops working — when the spread between the strongest and weakest block gets wide enough that the computer gives up on balancing.
That's the key detail: packs almost never fail all at once. A couple of tired modules drag the entire string down. The other 26 can still be perfectly serviceable.
Codes that usually show up alongside it
P0A80 rarely stores by itself. What's parked next to it in memory tells you more than P0A80 does.

If the scan shows P0A80 with a single block-weak code — say P3017 — that's a very different picture than P0A80 with five block codes scattered across the pack. The first is a strong reconditioning candidate. The second usually isn't.
You'll also likely be seeing the red triangle master warning and a Check Hybrid System message on the dash at the same time. Those are the driver-facing symptoms of the same event.
Why Arizona packs drift faster
Heat is the main enemy of a nickel-metal-hydride pack, and Phoenix supplies plenty of it. But the specific failure we see most often here isn't ambient temperature — it's cooling airflow.
Every Toyota and Lexus hybrid pack is air-cooled by a fan drawing cabin air through an intake, usually behind a rear seat or in the C-pillar. That intake pulls in dust, pet hair, and carpet fiber. In a garage in Mesa or Surprise, where fine dust is a fact of life, the filter and duct clog up over years.
When airflow drops, the modules closest to the exhaust end of the pack run hotter than the rest. They age faster. The spread widens. P0A80 sets years earlier than it otherwise would. A clogged fan doesn't kill a pack overnight — it just makes one section of it old before the rest.
That matters for the repair decision, because a pack that failed from a cooling problem often has a small cluster of bad modules rather than uniform end-of-life wear.

What happens if you keep driving on it
The car will usually still move, at least for a while. That's what makes P0A80 easy to ignore.
What you'll notice: the engine runs far more than it used to, including at stoplights. Fuel economy drops hard — a Gen 3 Prius that saw 48 mpg may fall into the low 30s. The state-of-charge gauge swings from full to nearly empty in a few blocks instead of moving gradually.
Eventually the system enters a reduced-power state. Acceleration becomes sluggish, and merging onto the 101 in July is not where you want to discover that. In heat, a struggling pack gets hotter, and a hotter pack degrades faster — the problem compounds on itself.

Which cars this applies to
P0A80 is a Toyota and Lexus code, so it's most common on the Prius, Camry Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, and the Lexus RX Hybrid. The 2010–2015 third-generation Prius is the single most frequent one we see it on in the Valley.
