P3011 Through P3024: How a Single Weak Battery Block Sets Your Codes

P3011–P3024 each point to one specific weak block inside your hybrid pack. Here's how the numbering works and what the block number tells a technician.

P3011 through P3024 are fourteen versions of the same code: "Battery Block Becomes Weak." The last two digits identify which block inside the pack is failing — P3011 is block 1, P3024 is block 14 — and that number tells a technician exactly where to open the pack and start measuring.

This is one of the more useful codes a Toyota or Lexus hybrid can throw, because it is specific. It is not saying "the battery is bad." It is saying "this particular section of the battery is no longer keeping up with the rest."

How the numbering works

A NiMH hybrid pack is a long series string of individual modules. In a Prius pack, 28 modules are wired end to end. The battery ECU does not monitor each module individually — it monitors them in pairs, called blocks. Twenty-eight modules make fourteen blocks, which is why the code range stops at P3024.

Count forward from P3011 and you have your block:

Block 1 is at one physical end of the pack, block 14 at the other. Which end depends on the model and how the pack is oriented in the car, so the number is a map reference, not a guess.

Some larger packs — certain Camry, Highlander and Lexus applications — use a different module count and report block faults through related code ranges. The principle does not change: the code names a location.

Why one weak block drags down the whole pack

Because the modules are wired in series, the same current flows through every one of them. There is no way for a strong module to carry extra load for a weak neighbor.

When one block has lost capacity, it sags lower under acceleration and climbs higher during regenerative braking than the blocks around it. The battery ECU watches the voltage spread between the highest and lowest blocks. Once that spread exceeds its threshold, it logs the code for the offending block.

It also starts protecting the pack. It narrows the state-of-charge window, refuses to discharge as deeply, and cuts off charging earlier. You feel that as:

  • Fuel economy dropping several MPG with no change in driving
  • The engine running at stoplights and low speeds where it used to stay off
  • The state-of-charge bar on the dash jumping from two bars to seven and back within a mile
  • Weaker acceleration when merging
  • A red triangle master warning or Check Hybrid System message

Left alone, the imbalance widens. The weak block gets cycled harder because the ECU keeps hunting for charge, and the strong blocks around it start wearing too. Eventually the spread gets bad enough that the ECU stops naming a block and sets P0A80 — Replace Hybrid Battery Pack instead. That is the same problem at a later stage.

What the block number actually tells us

A pack does not fail evenly, and it does not fail randomly. Airflow through the pack is what keeps modules alive, and airflow is not equal from one end to the other.

The cooling fan pulls cabin air in through an intake vent, pushes it across the modules, and exhausts it out the far side. Modules near the intake see cool air. Modules near the exhaust end see air that has already picked up heat from every module before it. Those downstream blocks run hotter their entire lives, and heat is what kills NiMH capacity.

So when we see a code from a block near the hot end of the pack, that fits the expected wear pattern and usually means the rest of that end is close behind. When we see a code from a block near the intake, that is unusual, and it points toward something else — a bad module from the factory, a corroded bus bar connection, or a voltage sense wire problem faking a low reading.

Multiple block codes at once, spread across the pack, mean something different again: the pack is worn broadly rather than failing at one point.

The Arizona factor

Heat is the main variable in NiMH pack life, and Arizona supplies plenty of it. A car parked outside in Phoenix in July has a cabin well over 140°F, and the pack sits in that cabin air. The battery cooling fan can only move air that is already hot.

The intake vent matters more here than almost anywhere. On most Prius generations it sits low on the rear passenger side, and it fills with dust, pet hair, and carpet fiber. A partly blocked intake reduces airflow across every module downstream — and the downstream blocks are the ones that show up in your code list.

We check that intake and the fan on every visit, including on third-generation Prius packs from 2010 to 2015, which is the most common pack we see with block-weak codes.

A single early block code is the best time to catch this. Reconditioning the pack works when the surrounding modules still have real capacity left, and the earlier you act, the more of them do. Full ranges are listed on our pricing page.
