P0A0F — Engine failed to start
What it means in plain English
On a hybrid, the gasoline engine is started by the hybrid system rather than a conventional starter motor. P0A0F means the system commanded the engine to start and the engine didn't. Because a hybrid code number is involved, people often assume the battery — but the failure is frequently on the ordinary engine side: fuel, spark, compression or a sensor.

Possible causes
Plural on purpose. Any of these can produce this result — which is exactly why a code is not a diagnosis.
- Ordinary engine no-start causes: fuel delivery, ignition, compression, or a crankshaft/camshaft position sensor fault.
- A hybrid battery too weak to crank the engine properly — possible, but not the first place to look.
- A motor-generator or inverter fault preventing the engine from being cranked.
- Engine mechanical problems.
- A low 12V supply affecting the modules that manage the start.
- Immobiliser or security-related conditions on some vehicles.
What a professional diagnostic process should check
- 1Determine whether the engine is actually being cranked or not — that single observation splits the diagnosis in half.
- 2Check for engine-side codes alongside P0A0F, which often point directly at the cause.
- 3Test fuel pressure, spark and compression as appropriate.
- 4Verify crankshaft and camshaft position sensor signals.
- 5Check hybrid battery state of charge and ability to deliver current.
- 6Test the 12V battery and charging voltage.
What you can safely do now
- Note exactly what happens: does the car go into READY? Does anything turn over? Any noise at all?
- Note whether it happens cold, hot, or intermittently.
- Check your fuel level — it sounds obvious, and it isn't always wrong.
- Have it diagnosed rather than replacing parts based on the code number.
What not to do
- Don't assume this is a hybrid battery code just because it starts with P0A.
- Don't repeatedly attempt to start it — you can drain the 12V and add a second problem on top of the first.
- Don't clear the code before diagnosis.
When towing or urgent service is appropriate
If the car won't start or won't stay running, tow it. There's nothing to be gained from trying to nurse it somewhere, and a lot to lose if it strands you in summer heat.
