Toyota and Lexus are the bulk of what we do, but they're not all of it. Honda, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Chevrolet hybrids all come through — and the important thing to understand is that these systems are genuinely different from Toyota's, so the diagnosis and the repair are different too.

Honda IMA is not a small Toyota system
This is the difference that catches people out. Honda's Integrated Motor Assist — used in the Insight, Civic Hybrid, Accord Hybrid and CR-Z — is a mild hybrid. The electric motor assists the engine; it can't drive the car on its own the way a Prius can. That changes what a failing pack feels like.
- You won't see a Prius-style “engine won't shut off at stops” symptom, because the Honda works differently to begin with.
- What you'll notice instead is the assist gauge doing less, the charge gauge swinging quickly, and the car feeling flatter under acceleration.
- The IMA warning light is Honda's equivalent of the hybrid system warning — different light, same principle: it means get it diagnosed, not buy a pack.
- Honda IMA packs run at a lower voltage than Toyota traction packs and use a different module design.
- Some Honda hybrid model years received software updates or extended battery coverage from the manufacturer. Check your VIN with a Honda dealer before paying out of pocket — that's genuinely worth doing.

Honda extended hybrid battery coverage on some model years. We'd rather you found that out from a dealer and paid nothing than paid us for something already covered. Call a Honda dealer with your VIN first.
Ford hybrids are closer to Toyota than you'd expect
The Escape Hybrid, Fusion Hybrid and C-Max use a power-split architecture very similar in principle to Toyota's. That's good news diagnostically — the symptom patterns and the testing approach translate, and these cars behave more like a Prius than a Honda does.
- Earlier Escape and Fusion hybrids use nickel-metal hydride packs, which age the same way Toyota's do in Arizona heat.
- Later Fusion and C-Max models moved to lithium-ion, which is a different service proposition — confirm by VIN.
- The Escape Hybrid was widely used as a taxi and fleet vehicle, so high-mileage examples are common and usually show even, whole-pack ageing.
- Pack location varies by model — some are under the cargo floor, which affects both access and mobile service.
Hyundai, Kia and lithium-ion packs
Hyundai and Kia hybrids — Sonata, Optima, Niro, Ioniq — use lithium-polymer packs rather than nickel-metal hydride. That matters for a few honest reasons.
- Lithium chemistry ages differently from nickel-metal hydride. It's generally less heat-tolerant in some respects and more so in others, and the failure pattern isn't the same.
- Module-level reconditioning is far less commonly viable on these packs than on a Toyota NiMH pack.
- Hyundai and Kia have offered long hybrid battery warranties on many model years — check your VIN with a dealer before paying anything.
- Parts sourcing outside the dealer network is harder than it is for Toyota. We'll be straight with you about what's realistic.

Heat is the other constant. Whatever badge is on the car, an Arizona hybrid pack lives a harder life than the same vehicle in a mild climate — and on most of these makes the pack is still cooled by cabin air, so the same cooling-intake advice applies.
