P0E15 — Battery Pack Coolant Heater Performance (Jeep 4xe, Pacifica Hybrid)

P0E15Service soon — don't leave it for months

What it means in plain English

Your pack's coolant heater is not performing — and it can block the free battery recall.

P0E15 says the heater that warms your high-voltage battery’s coolant is not doing what the controller asked. On its own it is a comfort and efficiency problem: the car runs as a petrol hybrid, electric mode is limited and cabin heat suffers. What makes it worth its own page is a consequence nobody warns owners about. While this code is active, the dealer’s programming tool can refuse to load the battery recall software — so a car that is entitled to a free battery campaign gets turned away until the heater is sorted, at the owner’s expense. If you are being told you must pay for something before a free recall can be done, this is usually why.

Which Toyota and Lexus models this applies to

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid 2021–2022 and Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe from 2021. On some model years Stellantis has published a software-only fix with no parts at all, so the model year decides whether this is a reflash or a repair.

Possible causes

Plural on purpose. Any of these can produce this result — which is exactly why a code is not a diagnosis.

  • Outdated control software setting the code when nothing is actually wrong — Stellantis has published software-only remedies covering tens of thousands of these vehicles.
  • Air trapped in the battery coolant loop after earlier work, which is a common cause and not a part failure.
  • Low coolant, or a leak in the pack’s cooling circuit.
  • A kinked or restricted coolant line.
  • The wrong coolant, or the wrong mix.
  • A failed auxiliary coolant pump, or a low-voltage supply or ground fault feeding the heater.
  • Genuine failure of the heater itself, which is the one case that needs the part.

What a professional diagnostic process should check

  1. 1Check the heater’s lock state before anything else. Stellantis defines three, and they mean different things: one clears on a power cycle, one needs a reset with the factory tool, and one is permanent and means the heater is replaced.
  2. 2Check the control software level against current bulletins before condemning any part.
  3. 3Check coolant level, condition and mix, and bleed the loop properly — trapped air is a documented cause.
  4. 4Check the auxiliary coolant pump and the low-voltage supply and ground to the heater.
  5. 5Find and fix the underlying condition rather than just resetting the lock. Stellantis’ own bulletin warns that resetting without fixing the cause guarantees the fault returns.
  6. 6Check the VIN for open battery recalls, since this code is what commonly blocks them.

What you can safely do now

  • If a dealer says they cannot do your free battery recall, ask specifically whether P0E15 is blocking the software update. That is the usual reason and it is worth hearing out loud.
  • Say whether your cabin heat is weak and whether electric mode has stopped working — both point here.
  • Ask whether your model year has a software-only fix, because several do.
  • Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What not to do

  • Don't pay for a heater before the software level and the coolant loop have been checked. On several model years the published fix is software with no parts at all.
  • Don't accept a reset on its own. If the condition that set it is still there it will come straight back, which the bulletin says in as many words.
  • Don't ignore it through a Phoenix summer. The same loop that heats the pack is part of how it is kept in range, and heat is what ages these packs.

When towing or urgent service is appropriate

Drivable. The car runs as a conventional hybrid with electric mode limited and weak cabin heat. It is a booking, not a tow — unless it is sitting alongside a battery warning or a loss of drive power, in which case treat those as the urgent part.

Not sure which category you're in? Call 833-995-7966 and describe what the car is doing. That call is free and it might save you a tow — or a much bigger repair.

Do not replace parts based on a code alone

Do not replace parts based on a code alone. A diagnostic trouble code tells you which circuit or system reported a problem — it does not identify which component failed. The same code can be set by several different faults, and clearing it without a diagnosis just hides the evidence. This page is educational; your vehicle needs its own inspection before any repair decision.

P0E15 — common questions

Why won't the dealer do my free recall?
Most often because this code is active and their programming tool will not load the battery software while it is. Fixing the heater fault unblocks the recall. It is worth asking them to confirm that in writing, because the order of operations is what decides what you pay for.
Is this the battery itself?
No. It is the heater that warms the battery’s coolant. The pack can be perfectly healthy with this code stored, which is why a battery quote off P0E15 alone is the wrong answer.
Can it be fixed with software?
On several model years, yes — Stellantis published software-only remedies with no parts for large numbers of these vehicles. Whether yours is one of them depends on the model year and the VIN, so that gets checked before any part is ordered.
