P1B96 is the Hyundai and Kia code for high-voltage battery performance degradation. Before treating it as a verdict, note that Kia issued a service bulletin covering the 2011–2014 Optima Hybrid that groups P1B70, P1B74 and P1B96 together as a high-voltage battery sensor circuit fault — meaning the sensing circuit, not the cells, can set this code. On a lithium pack that distinction is worth several thousand dollars, so the bulletin gets checked first.

Hyundai and Kia hybrids with lithium-polymer high-voltage packs — Sonata Hybrid, Optima Hybrid, Ioniq, Niro, Elantra Hybrid, Tucson Hybrid, Santa Fe Hybrid, Sorento Hybrid and Sportage Hybrid.

Possible causes

Plural on purpose. Any of these can produce this result — which is exactly why a code is not a diagnosis.

Genuine cell degradation on an older lithium pack.
A high-voltage battery voltage sensor circuit fault — see the Kia bulletin grouping P1B70, P1B74 and P1B96.
Battery management system software that predates the manufacturer's update.
Connector or harness resistance in the sensing circuit.
Cell imbalance the BMS can no longer correct.
Thermal management faults leaving part of the pack running hotter than the rest.

What a professional diagnostic process should check

1Check for outstanding Hyundai or Kia service bulletins and BMS software updates for the exact model year BEFORE any pack is quoted.
2Read all stored codes — P1B70 and P1B74 alongside this one change the interpretation significantly.
3Cell-group voltages and the spread between them, read from the BMS.
4Inspect the voltage-sensing harness and connectors for resistance and corrosion.
5Verify the pack's thermal management and cooling are working.
6Confirm 12V system health, which these systems are sensitive to.

What you can safely do now

Ask whether the applicable TSB and BMS software update have been checked. On these cars that is the first question, not the last.
Check your remaining factory hybrid warranty — Hyundai and Kia hybrid component coverage is long, and often still live on cars this age.
Get the full code list in writing.
Note whether the car goes into reduced power or "turtle" mode, and when.

What not to do

Don't authorise a lithium pack before the software and sensor circuit have been ruled out. This is the most expensive wrong turn on this page.
Don't clear the codes before they are recorded.
Don't assume an aftermarket rebuild is available the way it is for a Prius — these are welded, monitored lithium packs and the options are different.

When towing or urgent service is appropriate

Tow it if the car enters reduced-power or turtle mode, refuses to start, or warns about the hybrid system while moving. Lithium pack faults are less safe to drive on than nickel-metal hydride wear.

Does P1B96 mean I need a new hybrid battery?

Not on its own. Kia's own bulletin for the 2011–2014 Optima Hybrid groups this code with two sensor-circuit codes, which means the sensing circuit can set it without the cells being at fault. Check the bulletin and the software first.

Is my Hyundai or Kia still under hybrid warranty?

Quite possibly. Both makes have carried long hybrid-component coverage, and on these cars it frequently outlasts the owner's assumption that it expired. Check before you pay for anything — we will tell you if you are still covered.

Can a Hyundai or Kia lithium pack be reconditioned?

Not the way a Prius pack can. Lithium packs of this type are welded, monitored and sealed, so module-level rebuilding is not the routine option it is on nickel-metal hydride. We say so up front rather than selling a rebuild we would then have to refuse.
