Prius engine work · from a hybrid battery specialist
Prius engine swap and engine replacement
Sometimes a head gasket repair isn't the right repair. If coolant has already damaged a cylinder, the engine knocks, or it burns oil heavily, a replacement engine is often the more certain fix — and on some cars, cheaper. We'll tell you which one your car needs, and whether the car is worth either.
Hybrid battery specialists
We're a hybrid battery shop first. Head gaskets, EGR cleaning and engine swaps are the only engine jobs we take on — because on a high-mileage Prius the engine and the hybrid battery are one decision, and that decision is what we do all day. For brakes, suspension or routine maintenance, your regular mechanic is the right call.
How we handle it
- Honest head-gasket-or-swap recommendation, based on tests
- Replacement engine checked before it goes in
- EGR cleaned or replaced on the replacement engine too
- Hybrid battery tested, so the swap goes into a car worth keeping
Head gasket repair or engine swap?
The tests we run for a suspected head gasket also tell us whether the rest of the engine is sound. This is roughly how the decision falls out:
| What we find | Usually points to |
|---|---|
| Coolant leak into one cylinder, good compression, clean bores | Head gasket repair, with the EGR system cleaned |
| Scoring or damage in a cylinder after coolant got in | Engine swap |
| Engine was started with a cylinder full of coolant and now knocks | Engine swap |
| Heavy oil consumption on top of the head gasket failure | Engine swap — a new gasket on a worn bottom end won't last |
| Cracked or warped head beyond what machining can fix | Compare a new head against a swap — often the swap |
Which engine goes in
A replacement has to match your car's engine family and, within that, the model year closely enough that sensors, wiring and mounts line up. We confirm by VIN.
| Engine | Found in |
|---|---|
| 1.8L 2ZR-FXE | 2010–2015 Prius, 2012–2017 Prius v, 2011–2017 Lexus CT 200h, and a revised version in the 2016–2022 Prius |
| 1.5L 1NZ-FXE | 2004–2009 Prius and 2012–2019 Prius c |
The options are usually a low-mileage used engine or a remanufactured one. We'll tell you what's available for your car and what each option carries for warranty before you choose.
What a good Prius engine swap includes
- The replacement engine checked before it goes in — compression and a borescope look at the cylinders — rather than trusted on a mileage figure.
- The EGR cooler, valve and ports on the replacement engine cleaned or replaced. A used engine from another Prius carries the same carbon that killed yours.
- New PCV valve, and new gaskets and seals where they're accessible with the engine out.
- Toyota-spec coolant, bled properly, and fresh oil and filter.
- Codes cleared, hybrid system checked, road test, and a recheck of coolant and oil after the first heat cycles.
The battery question
A Prius old enough to need an engine is often old enough to need a hybrid battery. That's where being a battery shop matters: we test the pack before you commit, and show you the engine and battery numbers side by side. Sometimes the right answer is a swap. Sometimes it's a swap and a rebuilt battery. And sometimes it's selling the car as it is.
We buy Priuses with bad head gaskets and dead hybrid batteries
Blown head gasket, failed hybrid battery, or both — running or not. If the repair doesn't make sense for your car, we may be the buyer that does. Call with the year, the mileage and what's wrong, and we'll make you an offer. 623-323-0737.
