Prius head gasket repair and replacement in Chandler
Most hybrids in Chandler are newer cars, which is exactly why a head gasket problem here usually belongs to an older Prius — a 2010–2015 car bought used as a commuter, a second car or a first car for a new driver. We test to prove it, fix the cause along with the gasket, and check the hybrid battery so you know the whole picture before you spend.

Hybrid battery specialists
We're a hybrid battery shop first. Head gaskets, EGR cleaning and engine swaps are the only engine jobs we take on — because on a high-mileage Prius the engine and the hybrid battery are one decision, and that decision is what we do all day. For brakes, suspension or routine maintenance, your regular mechanic is the right call.
The Chandler pattern: fine on the freeway, rough in the driveway
A lot of Chandler Priuses spend their day on the Loop 101 and 202, at steady freeway speed where a leaking head gasket barely shows. The trouble appears after the car has sat — overnight in the driveway, or all day in an office lot off Price Road — when coolant has seeped into a cylinder. The first start is rough and shaky, the check engine light may come on, and then it runs fine again.
That pattern is worth taking seriously even though the car seems to recover. It's the stage where a head gasket repair is still a head gasket repair.
Don't take a flashing check engine light onto the 202
A flashing light means an active misfire. Freeway load makes it worse and can damage the catalytic converter quickly. Park it and call 623-323-0737.
Buying a used Prius in Chandler? Check for head gasket trouble first
A 2010–2015 Prius is a popular used buy in the East Valley, and a head gasket that's starting to go is one of the easier problems for a seller to hide. Before you pay:
- 1Ask for the engine to be completely cold when you arrive. A seller who has 'warmed it up for you' may be hiding the rough first start.
- 2Look at the coolant reservoir. A level at the very top of a freshly topped-up tank, or brown residue in it, deserves a question.
- 3Watch the tailpipe on the cold start for white smoke with a sweet smell.
- 4Plug in a scanner. If the emissions readiness monitors are incomplete, codes were probably cleared recently — or the 12V battery was disconnected, which is worth asking about.
- 5Ask whether the EGR system has ever been cleaned. On a car past 100,000 miles, 'no' means it's due.
- 6Have the hybrid battery tested. On a car this age it's the other expensive surprise.
Call 623-323-0737 before you buy and we'll talk through a pre-purchase check.
Repair, swap or sell
Once it's proven, the decision depends on the rest of the car. A sound engine with a leaking gasket gets a head gasket repair and a full EGR clean. An engine that has been damaged or burns oil is usually a better candidate for an engine swap. And if the hybrid battery is also near the end, the total may not make sense for the car — in which case we'll tell you that too.
