Prius head gasket repair and replacement in Chandler

A lot of Chandler Priuses spend their day on the Loop 101 and 202, at steady freeway speed where a leaking head gasket barely shows. The trouble appears after the car has sat — overnight in the driveway, or all day in an office lot off Price Road — when coolant has seeped into a cylinder. The first start is rough and shaky, the check engine light may come on, and then it runs fine again.

That pattern is worth taking seriously even though the car seems to recover. It's the stage where a head gasket repair is still a head gasket repair.

A 2010–2015 Prius is a popular used buy in the East Valley, and a head gasket that's starting to go is one of the easier problems for a seller to hide. Before you pay:

1. 1Ask for the engine to be completely cold when you arrive. A seller who has 'warmed it up for you' may be hiding the rough first start.
2. 2Look at the coolant reservoir. A level at the very top of a freshly topped-up tank, or brown residue in it, deserves a question.
3. 3Watch the tailpipe on the cold start for white smoke with a sweet smell.
4. 4Plug in a scanner. If the emissions readiness monitors are incomplete, codes were probably cleared recently — or the 12V battery was disconnected, which is worth asking about.
5. 5Ask whether the EGR system has ever been cleaned. On a car past 100,000 miles, 'no' means it's due.
6. 6Have the hybrid battery tested. On a car this age it's the other expensive surprise.

Once it's proven, the decision depends on the rest of the car. A sound engine with a leaking gasket gets a head gasket repair and a full EGR clean. An engine that has been damaged or burns oil is usually a better candidate for an engine swap.
