P1B96 does not always mean the pack

P1B96 reports high-voltage battery degradation, but a high-voltage battery voltage sensor circuit fault can also set it. Kia issued a bulletin for the 2011–2014 Optima Hybrid — the same corporate hybrid system — grouping P1B70, P1B74 and P1B96 together as a sensing circuit fault. Rule out the sensing circuit and the battery management software before authorising a lithium pack.

Ask this before authorising a pack

"Have the service bulletins and the battery management software update been checked for my model year?" On these cars that is the first question, not the last.

Does P1B96 mean my Sonata Hybrid needs a battery?

Not on its own. It reports degradation, but a voltage-sensing circuit fault can set it too, and Kia's bulletin on the closely related Optima Hybrid groups it with two sensor-circuit codes. Rule out the software and the sensing circuit before authorising a lithium pack.

Can a Sonata Hybrid pack be rebuilt?

No. These are welded, monitored lithium-polymer packs and the options are not what they are on a Prius. We supply and fit complete packs; we don't sell rebuilt lithium.

Am I still under Hyundai warranty?

Quite possibly. Hyundai hybrid component coverage is long and often still live on cars of this age. Call a dealer with your VIN before spending money with us or anyone else.
