Codes that show up on the Nissan Leaf
If a scanner has given you a code, start here. None of them is an instruction to buy a battery — each page says what the code means, what else causes it, and what a proper diagnosis checks.
- P0A80P0A80's standard description is literally “Replace Hybrid Battery Pack”, which is why it causes so much panic and so many unnecessary purchases. What it actually means is that the battery ECU has determined the pack is no longer performing within its expected parameters — typically because one or more blocks have deviated significantly from the rest. It is a strong signal that the pack needs attention. It is not a confirmation of which blocks, why, or whether the pack is the root cause rather than a victim of something else.
- P0A7FP0A7F reports that the hybrid battery pack has deteriorated beyond the limits the control system expects. In practice it shows up on packs that have aged — reduced capacity, blocks that no longer hold up under load, or a pack that can no longer be balanced. Like P0A80, it is a meaningful signal about the pack's condition rather than a specific instruction about which part to buy.
- P3011–P3024Toyota assigns a separate code to each block inside the high-voltage battery pack, running in sequence. When one of these sets, the battery ECU is telling you that a specific block has become weak relative to the others. This is genuinely useful information — it tells a technician exactly where in the pack to look. What it doesn't tell you is whether the rest of the pack is healthy enough for a spot repair to hold up.
- P33E6P33E6 is the Nissan LEAF's cell imbalance code, and it is the code LEAF owners are looking for when they search for P0A80 — P0A80 does not exist on a LEAF at all. Nissan's own detecting condition is that with the power switch on and no load, the gap between the highest and lowest cell voltage in the pack is outside the allowed range. Your scan tool may show it as “CELL CONTROLLER” rather than as a number. It is a two-trip code, so the EV system warning lamp comes on after the condition repeats. Imbalance is a measurement, not a verdict: it says the cells have drifted apart, not which one is at fault or that the pack is finished.
- P33EDP33ED is set when the battery controller sees a sudden voltage change in one of the pack's modules. Nissan's own possible-cause list for it has exactly one item: a module. Your scan tool may show it as “BATTERY PARALLEL DIAGNOSIS.” What makes this code different from every other code on this site is money: on 2019–2022 LEAFs it sits at the centre of an open safety recall, and whether it is stored decides whether Nissan reprograms the car or replaces the high-voltage battery at Nissan's expense. If you have this code, the first thing to do is not to get a quote — it is to check your VIN.
