Codes that show up on the Hyundai Kona Electric
If a scanner has given you a code, start here. None of them is an instruction to buy a battery — each page says what the code means, what else causes it, and what a proper diagnosis checks.
- P1B96P1B96 is the Hyundai and Kia code for high-voltage battery performance degradation. Before treating it as a verdict, note that Kia issued a service bulletin covering the 2011–2014 Optima Hybrid that groups P1B70, P1B74 and P1B96 together as a high-voltage battery sensor circuit fault — meaning the sensing circuit, not the cells, can set this code. On a lithium pack that distinction is worth several thousand dollars, so the bulletin gets checked first.
- P1B74P1B74 names the high-voltage battery voltage sensor circuit. A hybrid pack is only as trustworthy as the wiring that measures it, and when that circuit reports something implausible the battery management system stores a code. Kia's bulletin for the 2011–2014 Optima Hybrid lists P1B70, P1B74 and P1B96 together under a sensor circuit fault, which is the clearest statement available that these codes do not automatically mean the cells have failed.
- P1B70P1B70 is a manufacturer-specific code, so the number alone tells you nothing until you know the badge. On a Hyundai or Kia hybrid it means the battery computer found a cell sitting roughly a volt below the rest of the pack — a real cell drifting away from its neighbours. On a Chevrolet Volt or Cadillac ELR it is far more specific than that: it is the sense circuit for cell group 47 of the pack's 96 groups, and it sets when that circuit reads 0.2 volts or less. That number is the whole diagnosis. A lithium cell group genuinely sitting at 0.2V would be destroyed — the pack's own floor is 2.5V — so a reading that low points at a lost or broken sensing connection far more often than at a dead cell. Same code number, opposite first suspect.
