Codes that show up on the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
If a scanner has given you a code, start here. None of them is an instruction to buy a battery — each page says what the code means, what else causes it, and what a proper diagnosis checks.
- P1B96P1B96 is the Hyundai and Kia code for high-voltage battery performance degradation. Before treating it as a verdict, note that Kia issued a service bulletin covering the 2011–2014 Optima Hybrid that groups P1B70, P1B74 and P1B96 together as a high-voltage battery sensor circuit fault — meaning the sensing circuit, not the cells, can set this code. On a lithium pack that distinction is worth several thousand dollars, so the bulletin gets checked first.
- P1B74P1B74 names the high-voltage battery voltage sensor circuit. A hybrid pack is only as trustworthy as the wiring that measures it, and when that circuit reports something implausible the battery management system stores a code. Kia's bulletin for the 2011–2014 Optima Hybrid lists P1B70, P1B74 and P1B96 together under a sensor circuit fault, which is the clearest statement available that these codes do not automatically mean the cells have failed.
- P1B70P1B70 is a manufacturer-specific code, and the manufacturers did not agree. On Hyundai and Kia hybrids it is a high-voltage battery imbalance code and appears in a Kia bulletin alongside P1B74 and P1B96 as a sensor circuit fault. On GM products it points at a specific cell circuit reading low. Reading a generic code list without checking which make it came from is how this one gets misdiagnosed, so the first question here is what you drive.

Refurbished vs. New Hybrid Battery: What You're Actually Getting
Rebuilt hybrid packs run $600, $1,000 or $1,400 installed; new ones $2,100 or $3,500. Here's how each is built and how long it actually lasts in Arizona heat.

Don't crush a hybrid with the battery still in it
A crusher or shredder is the worst place a high-voltage battery can end up. It can start a fire deep in a scrap pile, it is not scrap metal under EPA's rules, and the pack is worth more out of the car than in it.

Hybrid and EV batteries on a tow yard: the storage risk nobody prices in
A dead hybrid on your lot still has a charged high-voltage battery in it, and a damaged lithium pack can catch fire again days after the crash. Here is what the NTSB found at tow yards, and what to do about the packs you hold.
Not sure what your hybrid needs? We'll work it out with you.
